However well we plan certain occasions, we end up being disappointed. Sometimes in unplanned situations, things happen so well in place that we realize that we could not have planned it that well. Our countdown to 2012 was one such one where the most unexpected things happened and it turned out to be one of the best trips we had ever made.
The surprise started when I reached office on Friday and came to know that Monday was a holiday .We didn't want to waste our long weekend. So we decided to drive down to South Dakota to see Mount Rushmore. We had little time to prepare. So didn't know much of the major attractions there. But still we started our journey at around 9:00 pm in a rented Jeep.
It was a pleasant night. As we drove towards the village side, the night started showing its real beauty. We felt like driving in space as all we could see was shiny twinkling stars all around, some vehicles passing us once in a while and some exits with food stops and gas stations. With our favorite songs playing in the radio, singing along with it at the top of our voices and enjoying the star studded sky, not sure how many hours we would have driven.Suddenly, a yellow light blinked in the dashboard of our car.We both were shocked. Fuel tank is showing reserve. In our high on songs and the sky, we didn’t notice about fuel.We checked for the nearest gas station in the GPS. It showed 10 miles which was relieving. We took the next exit and drove towards the gas station. The place was scaringly haunted with lights just around the gas station. The place around was pitch dark .We could not even see what is around the place, whether hill or forest or fields. The place reminded me of some horror movies where some scary creature jump out of the darkness and attacks.Anyways our pathetic fuel condition forced us to drive towards it.We told each other we will finish fuelling and leave the place in no time.Slowly we moved towards it, then came another surprise.‘Gas Station is out of service’.That was totally unexpected. We were not even sure how far the next gas station was. We drove back to the highway. The night we were enjoying so well before some 10 minutes became scary now. Lots of 'what ifs' went over my head. What if our fuel gets over before we find the next gas station ? What if we are in a forest and we get attacked by some animals? What if any buglary happen? The questions were endless.
We decided to call 911. We called and informed them our situation. The cops took the details of our location , asked us to keep going and assured to reach us on time if in case our fuel gets over. That was relieving. But the tension still was on till we actually found a gas station and filled the fuel. Then we started laughing at our stupidity and drove towards Rapid City.
Rapid City is the second-largest city in the state of South Dakota, Rapid City is also known as the "Gateway to the Black Hills" and the "City of Presidents". The city is surrounded and divided by mountain ranges.By the time we reached there it was past midnight. We bid goodbye to a tiresome journey and woke up to a fresh new start the next day..
